Glass artists are also business people and with this in mind the Contemporary Glass Society has partnered with the Design Trust to deliver a business booster course.
“This online course is aimed at both new and more established glass artists who want to develop their business and marketing skills, make more sales, improve their presentation and upgrade their level of professionalism,” explains Sue Purser Hope, Chair of the CGS.
This course will take place in early 2020 with six online sessions: four webinars will cover the key aspects to improve business skills and two guest sessions with specialist guest speakers.
Each webinar session is live and audio-visual, accessed through artists’ own computers. The sessions take place on Thursdays in the evening (8pm-10pm UK time) to make it easier to join in. In addition, each session will be recorded giving access to the entire course for 12 months enabling artists to watch them again at a time suiting them.
Design Trust creative business adviser and trainer Patricia van den Akker will run the course. Participants get access to a private online community hub of fellow glass designers and makers, so that they can both network with them and also ask questions to Patricia and other creatives.
The course runs from February 13 to April 2, 2020
This exclusive professional development programme includes:
• Six online workshops: four training sessions and two expert guest speakers
• Presentations and other resources from the sessions
• Access to the private online community of fellow glass participants
• The option to post business questions and your action plans for feedback
• Access to this course and community until December 2020

What is The Design Trust?
The Design Trust was set up in 1994 to provide business training to craftspeople and designers. In 2011, creative business adviser and trainer, Patricia van den Akker, turned the organisation into an online business school for designers and makers, providing specialist and practical business training to makers across the UK and overseas. To find about more about Patricia and The Design Trust, please visit www.thedesigntrust.co.uk.
The Business Booster Course was an excellent way of learning, discussing and networking with fellow glass makers about tried and tested ways of improving business acumen for those staring out in the glass world and for those more experienced who want to improve their business skills and knowledge. Facilitated by Patricia van den Akker, the Director of the Design Trust, subscribers to the Business Booster course are led through specific topics such as marketing, pricing, branding etc. The great thing about the course is that it has been designed specifically for people making or dealing with glass and the final two sessions were discussions with a leading gallery owner and marketing guru. As the course is delivered on line, subscribers are able to return to the weekly sessions and to network with fellow subscribers and with the facilitator herself. An invaluable course for glass makers of all standards.
