Mathé Shepheard
Japanese impression, 42 x 52cm

After studying ceramics and glass, Mathé became a designer/maker for about 10 years. Her vases were made for her in Stoke-on-Trent to her designs, in porcelain, which she then decorated with lustres. Mathé exhibited in London and Frankfurt selling locally and in the capital. She then joined Academia, lecturing in History of Art. She researched a local stained glass firm, John Hardman and Co and completed an MPhil on the subject. After Mathé retired she resumed painting seriously. She paints in watercolour and Indian ink. Mathé is an elected member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and Birmingham Watercolour Society. She regularly exhibits and has had a number of solo shows. "I like my work to generate a sense of déjà vu as well as a sense of the unexpected," says Mathé, who has now also returned to producing glass sculptures and clocks, which she used to exhibit in a venue opposite the Royal Academy until the shop closed down.
