Margaret Shields was born in 1942 and brought up in Middlesbrough. After Middlesbrough College of Art, she studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1989 she was awarded the Northern Arts Bursary for Painting and exhibited in a number of galleries, including Zillah Bell, Yorkshire, Zebra One, London, Anne-Mei Chadwick Gallery, London, Dean Clough Gallery, Halifax, and Chrtistie's, London. Since 2000 work has been exhibited at Eton College, Campden Gallery, Gloucestershire and Messums, London. Her work was mainly of urban subjects but in 1985 she moved to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and gradually her paintings began to reflect this change of location. Now all her output is focused on coastal images - different weather conditions, ships on the horizon, stormy and calm seas, individuals, families and riders on the beach, cliffs and dunes.
