Katherine Sutherland
Patterns, Mellon Udrigle, oil on canvas, 70 x 70cm

Katherine lives and works in the Scottish Highlands. By using direct brushstrokes in her work and an exciting colour palette she aims to produce truthful paintings which really get to the heart of a place. When Katherine was at school she felt more at home in the art department than anywhere else in the school. When she went on to train as a nurse in Edinburgh she found herself spending more time in art galleries than in the lecture theatres. "Marriage and motherhood did nothing to lessen my enthusiasm and in 2014 I took a leap of faith and concentrated on my painting full time. Now I am enjoying the daily challenge of devoting my time to a profession I love." Katherine's paintings are greatly influenced by the Scottish Colourists (1900 to 1930) and The Impressionists (1867 to 1886) in particular Paul Cezanne. "I am inspired by the works of Tom Thomson, Duncan Shanks, Peter Prendergast and Joan Eardley to name but a few. I admire their use of exciting brushwork, strong composition along with a great personal reverence of nature. By studying their work I have learned a great deal about the interpretation of light and the harmonious and balanced use of colour. I have tried to use their techniques in my own work. I am fascinated by and grateful for the seemingly endless visual inspiration I receive everyday on my doorstep."
