Richard Whincop was born in Fordingbridge, Hampshire in 1964. He graduated in Art History at York University in 1986. In 1988 he moved to Glasgow, becoming established as a figurative painter, exhibiting at galleries and art fairs throughout the UK and Ireland. From 2006 he had a series of solo shows, including museum pieces, which opened at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Museum in 2010. "My move to West Sussex in 2010 has brought major ecclesiastical commissions and a revival of interest in landscape painting," he reveals. His figurative work conducts a dialogue between past and present, combining symbolic elements from works of art of the past with contemporary figures. "In my landscape paintings I try to capture the unique character of a place seen in fleeting moments of a magical quality of light and atmosphere," he explains. "A recent development in my work combines figurative and landscape elements, placing contemporary figures in the context of the natural world."
