After the Rain, oil on board, 36 x 32cms

Hampshire based Colin Merrin paints in oils and watercolours. His work is in Her Majesty the Queen's collection. "My recent paintings have focused on the landscape of the South Downs," says Colin, who has moved from Sussex to Hampshire. "Having been born and brought up in London’s East End, I’ve lived and worked mainly in London, but for the past six years, I’ve lived on the south coast." Between 1971 and 1974 Colin studied graphic design at Maidstone College of Art. He then worked in numerous jobs from general labouring to making animated films for German TV, as well as teaching art in schools and colleges. In 1998 he took his masters degree at the University of London, Institute of Education. Since 1981 he has exhibited regularly in solo and group shows all over Britain and Europe. Colin was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 2009. His work is fundamentally representational although the use of abstraction is clearly evident. "My main interest lies in the painting process. In other words landscape is as much a vehicle for the act of painting as it is the other way round. I don’t see my work as simply recording, but a continuous and personal development of painting as an emotional and expressive force. I am currently planning on painting more urban landscapes as well as the Hampshire countryside."
