Blue Hydrangea

Award winning botanical watercolour artist Susan Thomson lives in Devon. She trained in graphic design and worked in advertising, before studying botanical drawing and watercolour painting at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. When there, she became fascinated by the huge variety of structure and detail in the plants and flowers. Since moving to Devon she started painting birds after visiting the bird reserves locally. She was lucky enough to see the amazing birds of paradise in Papua New Guinea while working there in the 1970s and also birds and flowers in Australia and New Zealand, which inspired her interest in these subjects. She brings together an eclectic mix of botanical, birds and graphic imaging to create her collection of work. Susan has won awards for her botanical exhibits and has her work in private collections of botanical art. She has exhibited widely in the UK, the highlights being the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy of Art’s ‘Summer Exhibition’ and the Westminster Art Gallery with the Society of Botanical Artists. Susan also exhibited in the Majlis Gallery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where she taught watercolour workshops.
