Lesley Banks
Towards Giudecca, 100x 100 cm, oil on canvas

Glasgow School of Art graduate Lesley Banks' early career focused on her life and those around her, seeking out the quintessential ordinariness of everyday life to create figurative interiors inspired by her tenement flat in Glasgow. "I was also a member of the Victorian Arlington Baths and produced two exhibitions using the life of the baths and its members as inspiration," she recalls. "In search of a new challenge I successfully applied to be Artist in Residence at Edinburgh Zoo with the help of a Scottish Arts Council Grant; I produced “Urban Zoo’ , an exhibition of paintings, photography and sound. Several trips to Italy sometimes on holiday sometimes grant assisted resulted in exhibitions featuring atmospheric Italian interiors and landscapes." Lesley is currently Scottish Canals first  Artist in Residence and she has been walking and painting the 137 miles of the Scottish canal network. So far the 'Gongoozler' paintings have been exhibited in Glasgow, Falkirk and Inverness. Lesley works mainly in oils but has recently been experimenting with mixed media on paper and painting on different surfaces including birch wood panels.
