Caroline Liddington
A place to be free, oil on canvas, 91 x 91 cm

After many years of training, experimenting, writing and observing, Caroline has produced a large body of creative work, in a variety of mediums. She began by studying fine art at Byam Shaw in London, later I specialised in Illustration at Kingston (BA) and at Falmouth (MA). In earlier years Caroline worked as a freelance illustrator and studio painter and later created Artyfun, an art school for children and young people, taught from her studio. "I have always been inspired by my surroundings, in the early years I worked figuratively, painting and sculpting portraits and using the human form as an integral part of the composition," she says. "Later I painted the rooms I inhabited, the windows I looked out of, the chairs I sat in and the doors I walked through. I explored the landscape surrounding and beyond my home. In recent years I have included my emotional response to the subject whilst experimenting with application and design. I paint as I am, with careful attention to detail and the placement of objects (blocks of colour) into space, with the constant re-adjustment of their relationship, until I am satisfied with the outcome. All paintings are created using oil paint; either on canvas or board and sizes range from 16 x 11 cm to canvases 183 cm wide or tall." Caroline has exhibited regularly since 1997, taking part in group shows across the country and in open studio events in Surrey, Cornwall and Dorset. In 2017 she took part in a successful joint show with artist Lynne Grace at Eype Centre for the Arts; they will be exhibiting again in 2018. Caroline also has a solo show at Town Mill Arts in Lyme Regis in July/Aug, 2018. She has published a book to accompany her current shows and would like to publish further books in the future. Her work is in various collections in the UK and USA.
