Ken Maharajah
Flamenco turn, watercolour

Ken Maharajah is a people painter who is passionate about capturing the human form and its emotional connection when engaged in activity. Although he studied art and illustration, he is a self-taught watercolourist. Born in London, Ken uses watercolour’s immediacy and unpredictability to express movement and atmospheric mood. It is this use of bold colour and loose painterly brush marks that has become his recognised signature. His current body of work is concerned with capturing the emotion of Flamenco dancing. In the pursuit of non-tourist Flamenco, Ken has studied in Spain, Cuba and the UK, almost becoming a permanent fixture at Flamenco workshops and performances. His Flamenco paintings were spotted by the internationally prestigious gallery Museo del Baile Flamenco in Seville, Spain. As a result, he became the first English artist and first watercolourist to exhibit there. When viewed together, Ken Maharajah’s paintings emit a highly emotive and animated story that capture the passion and energy of Flamenco. We are invited to emotionally connect with each performer’s uniqueness and expressions of liberty. It is a world that Ken has invited us to escape to and happily celebrate.
