Barbara Mackie
A Grove for Janis, acrylic on canvas, 150 x 120cm

Barbara was drawing regularly at eight years old and at 20 was awarded a scholarship to Yale University Summer School, USA. She was born in Penicuik near Edinburgh, Scotland and graduated from Edinburgh College of Art as a painter and draughtsman in the 1970s, exhibiting at the Stirling Gallery and in the Society of Scottish Artists. Barbara taught art in schools and colleges in Scotland, as well as privately, giving many demonstrations, and later becoming a manager of arts development in the community as well as expressive arts in primary education, taking any opportunity for my creative output in amongst those roles. "My work reflects lands that I have known and that interest me greatly," explains Barbara. "This imagery touches on reality but is abstract and expressive. Some of my work is close in tone and soft but I will also use a more vibrant palette to make powerful contrasts and create drama. I use drawing and collage to develop ideas and enjoy painting in oils, watercolours and acrylics." Barbara has shown work at the Scottish Arts Club, Edinburgh, the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and the Riccio Gallery, Midlothian.
